Spectrum 2015

ViBGYOR 2017 | Spectrum

FILM SPECTRUM @ ViBGYOR 2015

The Film Spectrum in the Open Entry category at ViBGYOR Film Festival-2015 comprises of three major sectons, namely Focus of the Year Package, ViBGYOR Theme Packages and the Kerala Spectrum Package. In addition to the Open Categories, there are film packages curated by the Festival Directorate, which include the International and National Retrospectives, Homages, Country Focus and/or Filmmaker-in-Focus package and Festival Director’s Specail package.

Focus of the Year ‘Green Growth’ Package:

The value of intact eco-systems and all the resources they provide us is a concept overlooked by economists and administrators in their preoccupations with GDP calculations. Nature is not giving out any more free lunches is what the economists warn us now. We are waking up to the revelations that our dependence on these resources needs to be regulated and it is high time we cleaned the mess we have created. But how soon and how big are going to be the steps we take toward this is what we have to ask ourselves.

ViBGYOR Theme Packages:

Films under the seven ViBGYOR theme packages would explore the central theme of ViBGYOR Festival, namely `celebrating identities and diversity’ in its depth and breadth.

  • Identities

Various minorities are facing different facets of discrimination. Many of these groups are struggling to preserve their identities and to resist the encroachments of the mainstream. The issues of Indigenous People, Dalits, Sexual and other Minorities come under this theme. Women’s rights, Gender equality, Racial discrimination etc are some of the often discussed topics under this ‘colour’ of ViBGYOR.

  • Gender & Sexuality

Films in this section and the ensuing discussions look at the construction of gender, and the power-relations that are inscribed within it. This theme examines the questions of insidious prescriptions and proscriptions that are constantly at work in the fabrication of gender and sexuality divides and disparities.

  • Rights

Basic human rights are enlisted by various organizations like UN and many of them have been legally approved as ‘fundamental rights’ by most nations across the world. But millions of people are still struggling to get their rights legitimized and implemented. This includes, Right to Food/Shelter/Security, Right to Equality, Freedom of Expression, Education, Employment and Health.

  • Developmentalism

Human beings are slowly realizing that they are just one of the meshes in the giant web of nature. And a handful of dedicated people are taking it as a mission to protect the environment. On the other hand many lucrative and agressive projects are in the offing in all parts of the world in the name of ‘development’. But ‘whose’ development is it? The issues listed under this ‘colour’ include, Industrialization, Corporate fascism, Displacement, Migration, Special Economic Zones, Genetically Modified Crops, Dams, Slum development, Roads, Conservation, Pollution, Natural Resources, Energy, Coastal Regulation Zones (CRZ) etc.

  • Nation State

The role of the State in the well-being of the human being is significant. But instead of protecting every citizen’s rights, the State at times robs us of our dignity and rights. The use and abuse of State machinery leave long-lasting effects on communities. The topics include Authoritarianism, Terrorism, International Disputes, Corruption, Right to Information and Public Interest Litigation (RTI & PIL) campaigns etc.

  • Fundamentalism v/s Diversity

Religions, faiths and codes of morality have significantly contributed to societal living in terms of a large body of norms and etiquettes that help foster a harmonious life. But lately, this human need for bonding with the Beyond and other humans is rather misused to the extent of spreading hatred and hostility among communities. Fundamentalism, Communalism and Religious harmony are some of the topics discussed by films under this ‘colour’.

  • Culture & Media

Media, the principal vehicle of promotion and dissemination of culture, has assumed mammoth power proportions in the globalized digital age to the extent of pushing conventional cultural models and patterns into the background and carving out its unique niche in the soio-cultural fabric. How consent is manufactured by media and other players in the cultural scenario is a major question this section would raise apart from throwing light to the survival of small, diverse ethnic cultures in the global village

Kerala Spectrum Package:This section showcases films made by filmmakers residing in Kerala, which includes documentaries based on `Kerala’ themes, short fiction films and also the `Focus-Children films’, either made by children or made by adults that catter to young audiences.

Other:Includes short fiction, music video, animation, experimental and spots films.

About ViBGYOR

About ViBGYOR

ViBGYOR International Film Festival is an alternative film movement built around the annual film festival and associated activities throughout the year. 'Celebrating identities and diversity' being its central theme, ViBGYOR explores the broad spectrum of the politics of identities through the creative medium of cinema, expressing solidarity with the struggles led by various individuals and peoples' movements for basic rights and a sustainable model of development.

Now in its 10th year, ViBGYOR Festival has grown into much more than a film festival. It is a celebration of the human spirit in its diverse expressions, a meeting place for filmmakers, activists, scholars, students, film-lovers, and common people from all walks of life. The 6-day Festival showcases around 100 documentaries, short fiction films, music videos, experimental films, spots, and animations from around the world and across India, in addition to hosting 'Face to Face' with filmmakers, C. Saratchandran Memorial Lecture, Mini Conferences, Campaigns, Workshops, Songs of Resistance, Cultural Night, Media Exhibitions and Farm & Food Fair. We also support film production and training through media workshops and film fellowships.

From its beginning in 2006, ViBGYOR has taken a different path, by taking films and filmmakers to places where ordinary people live, to people who do not have a camera or a canvas to bring their stories to light. The series of Mini festivals organized as Out-reach Programmes- the Village ViBGYOR conducted in panchayats and the Campus ViBGYOR in educational institutions-culminate in the annual festival in Thrissur town. The resonances of the annual festival are then effectively carried forward throughout the year with a series of ViBGYOR Touring Festivals, taken around the country.

ViBGYOR Film Festival and associated activities are coordinated by ViBGYOR Film Collective, a charitable society registered (Reg. No: R-192/07) under Travancore-Cochin Societies Registration Act 1955. ViBGYOR Film Collective is conceived as an open coalition of various networks and groups, representing Indigenous People, Dalits, Youth, South Asian Relations, Human Rights, Environment and Development, Women's Issues, Globalisation, Labour, Culture and Media etc. at national and South Asian level.

The vigour of ViBGYOR is sustained by groups of volunteers, young and old, who wish to think differently and proactively. Our efforts are supported by film societies, film clubs in colleges and schools and on a formal level by Thrissur Municipal Corporation, Zilla Panchayath, Information & Public Relations Department, Federation of Film Societies of India-Kerala Region, Department of Youth Welfare and other concerned organizations and movements across South Asia.

FAQ-Vibgyor

Film Submission FAQ

ELIGIBILITY | FILM FORMAT | FILM INFORMATION | FILM SELECTION | FILM EXHIBITION

ELIGIBILITY

Can I re-submit my film once entered at ViBGYOR?

No. ViBGYOR does not accept re-submissions. If you have specific questions, please contact info@vibgyorfilm.org

If my film is selected to screen at another Indian film festival, is it still eligible for submission to ViBGYOR?

Yes. But films premiered in Thrissur before ViBGYOR will not accepted

Do you accept series?

ViBGYOR exhibits one-off documentaries and omnibus feature docs. If your submission is part of a series, it will be considered but must be a stand-alone portion. It should not be an episode from a television show.

How many films can I submit?

You can submit as many films as you like, but DO NOT put multiple projects on the same DVD disc. Each film should be registered separately online, paying the Entry fee and meeting all eligibility requirements. Once you get the Registration/Entry number for each film, you could send them all as ONE bundle.

Do you accept rough-cuts?

We strongly encourage filmmakers to submit finished versions of their films. ViBGYOR does not exhibit works-in-progress. If you would like to submit a rough-cut for Selection Preview, please contact info@vibgyorfilm.org.

FILM FORMAT

What is your preferred submission format?

We do accept higher resolution formats like HD as Final Exhibition copy. However, we prefer to have 2 DVD copies of each film for preview to make the Selection process easier (as we explined earlier, online screeners are also accepted for selection).

FILM INFORMATION

Explain `Film Spectrum’:

This year we only have TWO spectrums. One may enter films under `Focus of the Year’ package or  `Malayalam Short Fiction’ package. The theme for the `Focus of the Year-2017’ package is ‘DISSENT.

How do you decide if a film falls under National (Indian) or International category?

Any film with 51 per cent or more Indian financing is considered an Indian film. The filmmaker’s country of birth and residence are also determining factors.

How do you determine Country of Production?

Country of Production is generally determined by place of birth/permanent residence of the filmmaker(s) and/or the country/countries where the financing for the film comes from. In distinguishing between Indian (in view of Film Fellowship) and International entries, our general rule is that any film with 51 per cent or more financing  from inside India is considered an Indian film.

Film stills and Photograph of the Director/s for Publicity

We need a high resolution film still (not less than 2MB) from each film for print & publicity purpose, especially to publish in our Film Festival Catalogue. You should upload a high quality film still along with your Online Film submission, where it is indicated in the Film Entry form. You also need to upload a photograph of the Director/s.

FILM SELECTION

All films will be previewed by a pre-selection jury consisting eminent persons from the field of film, media and social sciences. They will select films for programming as per the guidelines issued by the ViBGYOR Festival Directorate

When will I find out if my film has been selected?

The selected film list will be posted on the ViBGYOR website, www.vibgyorfilm.org by first week of July 2017.  We will contact only filmmakers of all selected films via email/phone. Please note that we will only contact the `primary contact’ listed on your entry form.

If my film is not selected, may I speak with the Festival Office for notes or comments?

Due to the overwhelming amount of submissions we cannot provide notes or comments on films selected/not selected for the Festival (unless as part of the `Filmmaker’s Workshop/Interface’ during the Festival, which you may choose to attend. The film selection Jury members will be present at the festival)

Number Seven is very special to ViBGYOR; seven colors may make it a rainbow; but we want to go further beyond and embrace all possible, imaginable hues and shades of these seven colours. The ViBGYOR Film Collective, the registered society that runs the ViBGYOR International Film Festival and its associated activities, was born in 2006 and was formally registered in 2007. The initiative to conceive and launch ViBGYOR came from a group of 7 organizations; call them the `founding organizations, if you wish. But ViBGYOR is still in a process of being formed, redefined and remoulded; and always it will be. Now ViBGYOR is a coalition of many organizations, movements and individuals, who support its growth in many different ways.

Though ViBGYOR has progressed admirably on the organizational part of the festival since the first edition, its financial status is still instable and insecure. This is because we have not so far depended on any corporate funding, but always have sought support from people individuals, organizations and agencies/foundations. We believe that the involvement of the people in resource mobilization is as important as their role in the organization of the festival and all allied activities. This people component is an essential to the character of ViBGYOR.

Ways in which you could SUPPORT ViBGYOR:

  • You can become a Member of ViBGYOR General Body, fulfilling the conditions of membership
  • You can be non-member of ViBGYOR, but still participate in its events by buying a Delegate/Family Pass for the annual festival and also contributing to the occasional activities.
  • You can solicit grants/sponsorships on behalf of ViBGYOR from private/public agencies or departments.
  • You can offer an annual contribution to the `C. Saratchandran-ViBGYOR Film Fellowship Fund (details as separate link) and support a budding filmmaker in her/his upcoming film project.
  • You could be anywhere in the world, but still could support ViBGYOR by buying a ViBGYOR Film Fraternity Membership. We have 3 types of Fraternity Membership options: Life Members (those who contribute INR 25,000 or $500 as one time contribution), Patron Members (those who contribute INR 10000 or $250) Associate Members (those who contribute INR 5,000 or $100 annually) and Members (those who contribute INR 1,000 or $30 annually).

Volunteers

Participation | Volunteers

ViBGYOR International Film Festival is an initiative of volunteers, young and old, who wish to THINK different and ACT different.

The 6-day festival and its associated activities before or after happen mainly around Thrissur and its surroundings. Thrissur is a small town; perhaps not big enough to host an international film festival. But for the past seven years there have been miracles happening out of the Small; and filmmakers, delegates and volunteers who have come from different parts of the world have witnessed these miracles and have done their role well in order to make miracles happen. The main share of these miracles comes from our young volunteers, who come from different college campuses, especially from Northern Kerala.

Every year we conduct a Young Volunteers Training Camp, where ViBGYOR themes, concerns and politics are discussed and debated. Apt films are screened at such Youth camps and they help in animation and discussion. Invigorated from these training sessions our Young volunteers get ready to work in any capacities under different departments of the ViBGYOR Film Festival or its outreach programmes.

Invitation to volunteer for ViBGYOR Film Festival is extended not simply to young people, but to anyone and everyone, to all age groups and profession, of any nation, far or near. No matter where you are and what do you do now, DO consider participating in the upcoming 8th Edition of ViBGYOR Film Festival as a volunteer.

Call Sarat (9809477058 )or Sarat Cheloor ( 9447546417) or write to info@vibgyorfilm.org and register your name as a Volunteer!
